1. Jay Wright ‘proud parent’ after Nova Knicks title
When Jay Wright coached Villanova, college basketball was a lot different.
Instead of massive player movement every offseason, players stuck around. You’d recruit players since they were 15. They’d come play for four years. And then they’d come back to workout after they’ve moved onto the next level.
That’s why watching the Nova Knicks win an NBA title made Jay Wright feel like a proud parent. He dished on that and more in an exclusive with our very own Jeff Goodman:
Here’s a few more takeaways from the chat:
Wright said he thought Dallas was a perfect for Jalen Brunson, as he played the true point guard next to an elite scorer in Luka Doncic. Before Brunson chose the Knicks, he told Wright he wanted to lead a team. Wright supported his decision, but admitted he wasn’t 100% sure Brunson could be the guy scoring wise. Well, Brunson closed out an elite Spurs defense with 45 points to win an NBA Championship. “I still can’t get over that.”
Will Jay Wright ever coach again? He said there’s zero chance. “I got out at the right time for me. There’s nothing wrong [with this era], it’s just different man. It’s professional sports.” Wright added: “When I was coaching I was maniacal. I had no life. It was my family and basketball and that was it. So doing normal things, I love it… I like beach, I like golf.”
What Wright does miss the most about coaching? “I miss the relationship with the players and I miss being in the position the job gave you to do a lot of nice things for people… The position afforded you an opportunity to do a lot of good things for people and I miss that.”
2. Notes from Dan Hurley’s media availability
For the first time this offseason, Dan Hurley caught up with local reporters to discuss the state of UConn basketball and some of the new additions to the roster.
If you don’t have time for the full 30-minute interview, here are some of the best quotes and takeaways:
