1. Louisville’s rivalry win over UK keyed by a freshman
One of college basketball’s best rivalries added another must-read chapter to its book when No. 12 Louisville held off No. 9 Kentucky, 96-88, Tuesday night at the Yum! Center.
Though it didn’t look like it’d be a classic the whole game.
The Cardinals led by 20 with 11:39 left. Freshman guard Mikel Brown Jr. put on a show (29 points on 8-of-16 shooting) with five assists, while backcourt mate Ryan Conwell added 24 points on 6-of-16 shooting. It figures that this was a night when yet another freshman was the best player on the floor.
“We have really good guards,” coach Pat Kelsey said. “Mikel is special. Ryan is huge for us. My goodness, was he (Mikel) special tonight.”
But like any good rival, Kentucky never gave up. It trailed 88-84 with 4:02 remaining, but a series of buckets and free throws from Brown was the difference. The freshman went 10-of-11 from the free-throw line, sealing Louisville’s highest-ranked opponent since beating Duke in 2020. It’s also the first time the Cardinals (3-0) have beaten Kentucky since Dec. 26, 2020.
While Louisville went just 13-of-40 (32%) from beyond the arc, it made up for the shooting woes by shooting 18-of-29 from 2 (62%), good for 1.25 points per possession. It also turned the ball over just six times compared to 13 from Kentucky.
The Wildcats needed more from senior All-SEC guard Otega Oweh. Saddled with foul trouble, he scored just 12 points with five turnovers in 28 minutes. Denzel Aberdeen led the Cats (2-1) with 26 points.
The postgame celebration in the Louisville locker room got a little wild. Not only was Pat Kelsey dancing, but he also dislocated a finger.
"There's so much adrenaline going on in my body right now, I didn't feel anything," he said.
2. Illinois survives the JT Toppin onslaught
Just when Illinois thought it had No. 11 Texas Tech under control, JT Toppin happened.
