No busted bubbles yet
If you'd like a smaller NCAA Tournament bubble, Wednesday wasn't the day (though Villanova came close). But we did get three more automatic bids - Colgate, McNeese and Montana State - and plenty of coaching news to note.
Here’s a stat to keep in mind as you and your friends argue about the bracket next week: Kansas has lost back-to-back games by 20+ points for the time in 105 years.
Let's get to Wednesday’s news.
1. No bubbles popped on Wednesday
Wednesday was good for bubble teams. Like every-team-on-the-bubble-won good.
When our Fielding the 68 experts showed off their updated bracket yesterday, it had TCU (won), Seton Hall, Michigan State and Virginia as its last four byes, then Miss State, St. John’s, Texas A&M and Colorado as its last four in.
The last four out? Indiana State, New Mexico (won), Villanova (won, somehow) and Iowa.
Throw in other bubble teams such as Wake Forest (won), Providence (won), Cincinnati (won), Utah (won) and even Kansas State (won; did the Wildcats get back onto the bubble?), and it was a clean sweep.
Now, did every bubble team deserve to win? That’s a different story altogether, especially when one considers Villanova needed a last-second 3-pointer to beat DePaul. The NCAA Tournament needs to meet its 68-team quota, but some of these teams might not deserve consideration, as Rob Dauster argues.
Today’s going to be even more important as every team is in action. Rest assured Sycamores fans are going to eagerly awaiting results. (And did get some encouraging comments from the NCAA Tournament seeding committee chair.)
2. Can Colgate, McNeese win in NCAA Tournament?
Two of the biggest favorites to win their conference tournaments delivered on Wednesday. Colgate rolled to its fourth straight Patriot League title, while McNeese had no trouble wrapping up the Southland.
Could either one win a game next week? Hold that thought.
