1. Auburn’s task? Replace nine seniors
Bruce Pearl said recently that his contract runs another five years, and he “would be surprised if I were to last five years.” Last week, it emerged that the Auburn basketball coach talked with various people about replacing Tommy Tuberville as one of Alabama’s Senators. (He’s taking a few more weeks to decide; Tuberville’s term ends in 2027 and he’s running for Governor of Alabama.)
What about basketball?
Pearl’s coming off his second Final Four appearance with an Auburn team that started the 2024-25 season 21-1, featured nine seniors and an All-American in big man Johni Broome.
How did he reload? By retaining the one non-senior from the roster, then bringing on four transfers, two JUCO players, an international wing, and three freshmen. And … that’s not so bad as Matt McCall and Jeff Goodman noted in their offseason grades.
This group might not be the defensive force Auburn was last season. In fact, it might have trouble making stops. But Pearl likely will find a way to maximize his players. The Tigers have finished in top 10 of defensive efficiency in three of the last four seasons.
It’ll be just as interesting to see how this squad scores.
UCF transfer Keyshawn Hall averaged nearly 19 a game last season, but needed a lot of shots. D-II transfer Elyjah Freeman has size (6-8), shooting and can put the ball on the deck. Abdul Bashir is essentially the same. Texas Tech transfer Kevin Overton and Miss State transfer KeShawn Murphy should fill supporting roles.
Most of the scoring should come from sophomore Tahaad Pettiford, the 6-1 jitterbug who can get by any defender and heat up from outside (37% from deep last season). He’s expected to be among the contenders for SEC and NPOY, which would make this the third time in three seasons Pearl’s team can revolve around one of the game’s top five players.
The previous players (Broome and Jabari Smith) were big men who could score efficiently and impact the game on defense. Will that be an issue for Pettiford?
That’ll be the biggest question for Auburn’s continued success.
2. Mackenzie Mgbako out until November
If Bucky Ball gets off to a slow start, it might be to missing one of its key pieces.
