1. Iowa State dismantles Mississippi State

Iowa State usually pummels its non-conference opponents. So would and SEC opponent on a neutral court be any different? Guess not.

The No. 16 Cyclones ran away from Mississippi State on Monday night, 96-80, at thew Sanford Pentagon in South Dakota.

They led by two points with just over five minutes left in the first half, but stretched it 20 after just six more minutes of game time. The Bulldogs (1-1) were hitting shots to keep pace, but turnovers doomed them: a school-record 26 on 76 possessions, or 34.3% of their possessions. This was a team that had a 15.3% TO rate last season.

That was a losing formula vs. Iowa State (3-0), which shot 51.4% from the field, grabbed 40% of its misses, and scored 1.27 points per possession. It even managed some razzle dazzle at times.

Senior guard Tamin Lipsey (a career-high 25 points on 17 shots, 6 assists, 3 steals) controlled most of the game, and when he wasn’t passing, it was senior forward Joshua Jefferson (18 points, 4 assists), who also facilitated the offense.

“Tamin commanded the game,” coach T.J. Otzelberger said. “Tamin controlled the game. Tamin directed the game. Tamin, the pace we played at, everything that happened out there, to have six assists, two turnovers, to make all the plays he made, (he) was the best player on the court tonight.”

Eight players logged double-digit minutes for a win that’ll look good come Selection Sunday.

The Bulldogs got 25 points from Josh Hubbard, who’s averaging 26.5 points a game. They’ll need more from the supporting cast to get back to the NCAA Tournament.

Guard Jayden Epps, who did not travel with the team to South Dakota, could’ve helped with some of those ball-handling turnovers, but it’s clear Iowa State would’ve been a cut above even with Epps.

2. UConn’s ready for its schedule test + more results

Connecticut won its first three games by an average of 38 points. And Monday’s 89-62 drubbing of Columbia probably could’ve been worse. So are the Huskies ready to start perhaps the toughest stretch of their season this weekend?
