John Calipari, Nate Oats and Mark Pope were among the coaches who held court at SEC media day. Here's what else to know. Plus: Preseason polls from the ACC and OVC, Wake Forest snags another top 100 prospects, injury updates, and much more.
Good morning! Does it seem like the college hoops season is closer than ever, but the days are getting longer as we wait? All these media events are great — The Field of 68 is at the Big South; watch coverage on YouTube or X.com/Twitter — but I can’t wait for some actual, real games.
So close. In the meantime, here’s Tuesday’s news.

Best of all, they arrive in unmarked packaging that won't raise eyebrows – your under-the-sheets activity remains your delicious secret (unless you choose to share it).

1. What to know from Day 1 of SEC media day
SEC media day is a two-day event, which meant some of the notable coaches (such as Todd Golden, Steven Pearl and Rick Barnes) speak today.
Here’s what you missed from Tuesday:
Nate Oats has elevated Alabama basketball to new heights, reaching a Final Four and an Elite Eight in back-to-back seasons. How can the Tide reach the next level? “Defense. We have to get our defense back to Top 5 or Top 10. That’s the answer,” Oats said. The Tide finished third in defensive efficiency in 2023, but their offense was 20th.
Arkansas coach John Calipari didn't mince words on how he feels about the portal. “If someone puts their name in the portal, I say, You’re not coming back, because it’s not going to be transactional,” he said. “If I become transactional — 'I'm going to pay you this to do this and that' — then I won't do this anymore. I don't need to."
He also began with a pretty pointed opening statement. "We scrimmaged Sunday in Hot Springs. I'm not going to say it was a debacle, but what would be the next word up from debacle?" Calipari joked. "We got a ways to go. I got a good group, but we got a ways to go to be what people think we're gonna be."
Also: Calipari said the NCAA Tournament shouldn’t expand.
This must have been promising for Kentucky fans to hear:
Mark Pope says “there is not a chance” they can keep Jayden Quaintance from playing this season.
“He is racing back to health at light-speed. It is remarkable. He feels like he is on the verge of being ready to go, but we’re just hitting the brakes full time to make sure.”

The key to Ole Miss’s success? Kentucky transfer Travis Perry. "We need him (Perry) to have the best year he's ever had playing basketball for our team to do what we would all like to do in Oxford," coach Chris Beard said
South Carolina got standout guard Meechie Johnson back after a brief second stint at Ohio State. It wasn’t a tough choice to have him back. “I said it when he left. I love the kid,” coach Lamont Paris said. “I’ve known his family, his uncle, for an eternity. I’m from Ohio. It just really wasn’t much of a decision at all for us. As he gets here, we’ve talked about it as a staff, we can’t imagine having brought a better piece into our team than Meechie Johnson.”
Georgia was elite defensively last season with a litany of quick bigs to patrol the paint, including Asa Newell. Now it has to adjust. "Our roster makeup is different," coach Mike White said. "We're not as big, not as physical, but we're a little quicker and faster. And potentially our aim at least, is to force more turnovers and extend pressure a little more."
2. Everyone’s chasing Duke again
There aren’t a ton of surprises at the top of the ACC preseason poll.
