1. UCF delivers a true stunner at No. 19 BYU
UCF did something Tuesday night that only the sport’s elite teams have managed: Win at BYU.
Even more impressive, the Knights played without leading scorer Riley Kugel, who has missed consecutive games with an injury. Yet they handled No. 19 BYU, 97-84. They led 23-8 after just six minutes and were up by 24 at halftime, the largest first-half deficit for BYU all season.
They joined Arizona and Houston as the only teams to win at BYU this season.
UCF was brilliant offensively all game, mostly thanks to point guard Themus Fulks. He scored 24 points and had 11 of UCF's 25 assists. Versatile forward Jordan Burks also scored 24.
UCF (20-7, 9-6 in Big 12) shot 22-of-40 (55%) on 2s, 14-of-24 (58%) from 3, and also dished 25 assists. The ball movement of the Knights was terrific, and that shows in the assist numbers. It also was a nice result for UCF’s NCAA Tournament profile. Adding a Quad 1 win should cement the Knights in the field.
"They were a way hungrier team, they punked us and they deserve all the credit,” BYU coach Kevin Young said.
BYU (20-8, 8-7) managed to salvage the final score and overall numbers a bit. It trailed by 27 with six minutes left and cut the lead to 13 at the end.
AJ Dybantsa ended up scoring 29 points, and Rob Wright had 20, but Dybantsa scored just 10 in the first half on 4-of-12 shooting, and Wright had four on 1-of-9. The final numbers were solid, but the game wasn't nearly that close.
2. Bradley, Burries push Arizona past Baylor
Arizona needed every bit of its backcourt on Tuesday night.
Jaden Bradley scored 25 points, Brayden Burries added 24 as the No. 2 Wildcats survived a big push from Baylor.
"The toughness you get from a senior leader like Bradley and the toughness you get from a freshman guard like Burries was incredibly special. I thought those two guys were awesome today." Arizona coach Tommy Lloyd said.
Baylor led at halftime and grew that lead to 10 early in the second half, playing fast and confident in front of a raucous home crowd. Even when a 14-2 Arizona run erased that lead, the Bears (14-14, 4-11 in Big 12) didn’t go away. There were 14 lead changes in the game, most coming in the final 10 minutes.
The Wildcats delivered the final blow with about 40 seconds left when Ivan Kharchenkov grabbed an offensive board, then dished it to Burries who drilled a dagger.
The Wildcats (26-2, 13-2) now have a two-game lead in the Big 12 as Houston, Iowa State, Texas Tech and Kansas are all tied for second. The Jayhawks come to Tucson on Saturday.
Freshman Koa Peat missed his third-straight game while recovering from a lower-leg injury, but did spend time getting loose before the game. It’s unclear if he’ll be ready for Saturday.
3. How’d the bubble teams fare on Tuesday?
It was a busy day for bubble teams with eight teams firmly on the bubble in action.
