1. Wisconsin’s unlikely upset ‘stings’ Michigan
Wisconsin entered Saturday as 19.5 point underdogs, with just a 4.4% chance to win at Michigan, per KenPom. So much for that. The Badgers walked into Ann Arbor and defeated the Wolverines, 91-88.
This game was back-and-forth throughout, and an unlikely hero made the biggest shot. Senior guard Andrew Rhode, who had only attempted two field goals with no makes, hit a triple with 2:57 left to put Wisconsin up 88-84. The Badgers held on from there.
John Blackwell and Nick Boyd combined for 48 points, eight rebounds and nine assists. Lithuanian freshman forward Aleksas Bieliauskas also had a career-high 17 points with five triples. The Badgers (11-5, 3-2 in Big Ten) shot 15-of-33 (45%) from distance as a team. It’s a huge win for a Wisconsin team that had lost almost every big game its been in this season, and might have established a blueprint for how to beat a team that looked unbeatable at times.
Michigan (14-1, 4-1) showed it was vulnerable by squeaking by Penn State early in the week, and now it has a loss. Coach Dusty May said postgame that might be a good thing.
“It’s like your grass growing — you don’t realize it needs cut until you take a couple days off and see that it’s growing,” May said. “Our grass was probably growing a bit under our feet. We weren’t quite as active or determined and our processes haven’t been as good lately.”
It’ll now be about how Michigan responds with a trip out west to Oregon and Washington this week.
“Obviously this one stings, but we’re excited to see if we can bounce back,” May said.
2. How about the other unbeatens?
Michigan was one of six unbeaten teams entering the weekend. All the other remaining unbeatens — Arizona, Iowa State, Nebraska, Vanderbilt and Miami (Ohio) — took care of business.
