The weekend in college hoops

Plenty of programs made transfer portal additions over the weekend, including Gonzaga and Texas A&M, while N.C. State snagged a notable international player. Plus: the 2025-26 season just added a marquee event for opening day.

Good morning! Did your Kentucky Derby bet win?

Let's get to the college basketball news from the last few days.

1. Did college hoops get a marquee opening day?

The next few weeks/months will have regular updates on the 2025-26 college hoops schedule. Even better? The start of the season is already taking shape.

The are regular complaints from college hoops media about the relatively lackluster start to the college hoops season. A doubleheader featuring BYU-Villanova and Florida-Arizona won’t silence everyone, but it’ll be awfully close.

Consider that fans get to watch:

  • The top incoming freshman in A.J. Dybantsa at BYU

  • A revamped ‘Nova squad under new coach Kevin Willard

  • Two 5-star freshman for Arizona

  • And the reigning champs’ first game since winning it all

Throw in that there’s a good chance LeBron James will be in attendance (to watch youngest son Bryce at Zona) and that three of the four teams likely will be preseason Top 25 teams, and that’s a compelling kickoff event with plenty of overall storylines.

And the following day, Tuesday, Nov. 4? Duke and Texas reportedly are finalizing an agreement to play in Charlotte.

There’s more news beyond the start of the season, too: Dan Hurley said UConn will be part of the 2025 Jimmy V Classic at MSG. Clemson and BYU also are in the field. The fourth team is still TBD. Also: Duke’s supposedly playing at Michigan State.

There might be more announcements coming soon about opening day event as well. You’ll certainly be able to read about it in the Daily.

2. N.C. State’s roster roster might be a wrap

Will Wade’s never had much trouble landing talented players. That’s certainly not changing now that he’s at N.C. State.
