1. Not everyone entered the transfer portal
Was your timeline flooded with news about players entering the transfer portal? There’s a reason for that. About 42 percent of all the players entered.
Still, there were a handful of players who announced Tuesday that they’ll return to their current programs.
On Monday, North Carolina announced Michael Malone as its new coach. Now he has to build a roster. Retaining Luka Bogavac is a good place to start. The 6-6 guard from Montenegro averaged 9.1 ppg in his freshman year.
Fresh off an NIT title, Kevin Overton will return to Auburn for his senior season. The junior guard averaged 14.1 ppg and shot 41% from deep. He was pivotal in the Tigers run to winning the NIT, scoring 26 points in the title game against Tulsa.
Cam Fletcher might be the front runner for next season’s “He’s still in college?” award. The 6-7 guard got a waiver and plans to return to High Point for his seventh college season. Fletcher, who also spent time at Kentucky, Florida State and Xavier, had season-ending injuries In two seasons and played in the 2020-21 COVID year. So, he got an approved waiver. Fletcher averaged 13.2 ppg and 7.1 rpg for the Panthers and scored 25 points in their Round of 32 loss to Arkansas.
Speaking of Kentucky, the Wildcats will have Kam Williams back. The 6-8 wing averaged 6.0 ppg and shot 35% from 3 in 18 mpg. He should have a larger role next season.
Georgia retained sophomore forward Kanon Catchings, who started all 32 games for the Bulldogs and was one of their best players during SEC play. He averaged 11.6 ppg and 4.8 rpg this season.
Expect bigs who can rebound and block shots to get paid. Nevada doesn’t have to worry about adding a new big since Elijah Price will return for his junior season. The 6-9 forward averaged 12.8 ppg, 8.5 rpg and blocked 1.7 shots per game. He’ll be among the top players in the Mountain West.
