1. Michigan adds Brown HC Mike Martin to staff

With Dusty May bringing Michigan assistant Drew Williamson with him to the Dallas Mavericks, there was an open spot on the staff that new head coach Mike Boynton needed to fill.

He made his decision, adding a current head coach at another D-I program.

Mike Martin spent 13 seasons at Brown, amassing a 171-202 record. He didn’t make an NCAA Tournament appearance during his time and didn't win an Ivy League title. Yet for a program that has to compete with the likes of Princeton, Yale, and Harvard every year, the Bears have been more competitive than expected under Martin, who earned Conference Coach of the Year honors in 2019.

Martin’s responsibility with the Wolverines will reportedly be to run the offense. During the years when Brown was competitive, it ranked in the top third nationally in three-pointers made and attempted.

Additionally for the Wolverines, they’ll be without guard LJ Cason, who will be entering the transfer portal following the coaching change. He averaged 8.4 ppg as one of the best backup guards in the country before suffering a season-ending ACL injury in February.

With his recovery timeline likely in the heart of next year, he’ll likely be looking at a backup role somewhere else, hoping to get into the mix at some point since he has a 5th year to work with no matter what, thanks to the new age-based eligibility rules by the NCAA.

As for Brown, this is a big blow, and the Bears now have a coaching search to conduct in mid-July, just a few months before the tipoff of the 2026-27 season. Jeff Goodman, however, believes Brown will hire internally.
