Stunner in Seattle
Seattle U earns a rare win against Washington. The last time that happened? Coach Chris Victor hadn’t even been born. Plus, Tennessee gets workmanlike win, the Diamond Head Classic final is set, and there's already a coveted prospect in the portal.
Merry Christmas eve everyone! It was a light slate of hoops on Monday, but still some news to cover.
And as a reminder, no Daily tomorrow. We’re off for Christmas.
1. Seattle defeats Washington, breaks massive losing streak
For the first time in 46 years, Seattle has defeated in-state foe Washington. Seattle grabbed the 79-70 win on Washington’s home court, marking the first win over the Huskies since Nov. 28, 1978 in the 40th meeting between the two programs. Merry Christmas to the Redhawks!
Seattle (5-8) took charge early and led 16-3 after the first eight minutes and 38-23 at halftime. Washington responded with a stronger second half, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the early deficit.
Senior forward Matthew-Alexander Moncrieffe had career highs in both points and rebounds with 23 and 16. Junior guard John Christofilis added two four-point plays and 21 points. Seattle’s 29-of-32 free-throw shooting was key.
Seattle U’s first win over Washington as a D-I program in 16 tries, and first victory over a power conference opponent since December 2018 (Cal).
A program-defining moment for Chris Victor.

Last season in this cross-town rivalry, Seattle had a 14-point lead in the second half and let the game slip away in double overtime. It has to feel good to finally get over the hump.
Washington now falls to 8-4 on the season and slides to No. 103 in Kenpom, the second worst rating among Big 10 teams, in front of only Minnesota (No. 116). Not an ideal start to the Danny Sprinkle era.
2. Tennessee remains undefeated, plus Diamond Head Classic results
No. 1 Tennessee will head into the holiday break a proud group.
