1. Kansas gives No. 2 Iowa State a ‘beatdown’
Kansas pulled off one of the most impressive wins of the season on Tuesday, beating No. 2 Iowa State, 84-63. Just needed a little Phog Magic.
Kansas never trailed, took a 44-23 lead into the half, and even found another gear in the second half. The Cyclones has issues with ball control in the first half (10 turnovers), but simply couldn’t get any stops. Iowa State looked a step slow all night, and the Jayhawks had exceptional ball movement.
It was only the second time this season an AP Top 10 team has lost a game by 20+ points. And yes, Iowa State was involved in the other one well.
“That was an absolute beatdown tonight from the start,” Cyclones coach TJ Otzelberger said.”
The Jayhawks (12-5, 2-2 in Big 12) couldn't miss from three. They went 12-of-24 from downtown with Tre White (19 points, including 5-of-7 from deep) leading the way. Darryn Peterson pitched in 16 points, and Melvin Council also added 15. Don't discount what Jamari McDowell did, either. He scored eight points with six assists off the bench.
Kansas reportedly had a players' only meeting this week, which helped? “I had no idea about the players meeting, but they should have it more often,” coach Bill Self said.
Perhaps the best news of the night? Peterson checked out with almost six minutes left in the game to manage his minutes, but showed no signs of cramping with perhaps his most impressive physically impressive game of the season.
Iowa State (16-1, 3-1) struggled to get anything rolling on this aggressive Kansas defense. The Jayhawks crowded shooters and imposed their physicality on Joshua Jefferson. He scored just 14 points with just one assist and five turnovers.
Jefferson, Tamin Lipsey, and Milan Momcilovic went a combined 11-for-39 from the field. That trio is the engine for the Cyclones' offense, and Kansas held them in check.
2. And then there were four …
Michigan lost on Saturday and Iowa State lost last night, which leaves the sport four unbeaten teams: Arizona, Vanderbilt and two others in action on Tuesday, Miami of Ohio and Nebraska.
Let’s start with No. 8 Nebraska.
