1. As expected, it’s St. John’s, UConn atop Big East poll

UConn had the most preseason first-team All-Big East selections, but St. John’s was picked to finish first in the 2025-26 preseason coaches poll, which was announced Tuesday.

That sums up the state of the league. Everyone’s chasing those two programs.

How does Dan Hurley feel about that? “Preseason polls are pretty meaningless. I don’t even do mine,” he said. “I think I told Luke to go do that s---.” (Yes, this is the same Hurley).

Anyway, here's the full poll

  1. St John's 97 (7 first-place votes)

  2. UConn 94 (4)

  3. Creighton 80

  4. Providence 64

  5. Marquette 60

  6. Georgetown 57

  7. Villanova 50

  8. Xavier 33

  9. DePaul 29

  10. Butler 26

  11. Seton Hall 15

St John's big man Zuby Ejiofor took the Big East preseason POY award (and was omitted from the first team selections as a result). That meant no team had more first-team spots than UConn, with three, the most in the poll’s history from one team.

Big East All-League selections

First Team

  • Solo Ball, G, UConn

  • Chase Ross, G, Marquette

  • Alex Karaban, F, UConn

  • Bryce Hopkins, F, St John's

  • Owen Freeman, F, Creighton

  • Tarris Reed, C, UConn

Second Team

  • Jason Edwards, G, Providence

  • KJ Lewis, G, Georgetown

  • Silas Demary, G, UConn

  • Ian Jackson, G, St John's

  • Josh Dix, G, Creighton

Third Team

  • Nik Graves, G, Creighton

  • Malik Mack, G, Georgetown

  • CJ Gunn, G, DePaul

  • Joson Sanon, G, St John's

  • Dillon Mitchell, F, St John's

  • Jackson McAndrew, F, Creighton

  • Oswin Erhunmwunse, F, Providence

Dillon Mitchell got the starting nod during the recent St. John’s exhibition, but voters reflected what the Johnnies will likely do going forward: Start Hopkins. But things will change depending on the matchup.

"I think you're gonna find the starting lineup changes consistently with this basketball team based on matchups," coach Rick Pitino said. "If we play a small team, we'll go with a small lineup; if we play a big team we'll go with a big lineup. You'll know who I think the five best players are when there are five minutes left in the game. And these [Oziyah Sellers and Ejiofor] will be two of them.

Other media day highlights:

  • When asked how much longer he’ll coach, Pitino said "I think my time is coming to an end."

  • Georgetown coach Ed Cooley had high praise for KJ Lewis. "I feel the Big East, at Georgetown, has the best defensive player in America with KJ Lewis." But also: "I'm writing his check and he has to cash it.”

  • Hurley said UConn’s approach won’t be what it had last season when he “coached that team angry, I coached them with too much ego,” he said. "The will, the rebounding, and the junkyard dog mentality…that identity that my teams have had for a long time, that I took for granted that we had. We’re back to that now.”

  • Marquette would love to think that the next Oso Ighodaro is on the roster. "We got a young man on our team named Caedin Hamilton, who is following in Oso Ighodaro's footsteps as a ball-handler and a passer," coach Shaka Smart said. "I'm not saying he's the same yet, but he's going to take a huge jump for our team because of the growth he made in the offseason."

  • Marquette guard Sean Jones is also back and looks great, Smart said. However, he did have EIGHT fouls in a scrimmage the other day.

  • It'll be a by-committee scoring approach for Villanova. "I don't know if we have a superstar, but we have ten guys who could probably get you," coach Kevin Willard said.

  • Seton Hall coach Shaheen Holloway isn’t fazed by being picked last. “That’s a bunch of people that have never seen my team, picking other people’s teams, based on what they heard, so I don’t care.”
