‘Shame on the coaches’
Tom Izzo’s disgusted by the professional players being courted and signed by college programs. Plus: Vandy loses a key guard, Marquette parts with a player, Northern Colorado gets a big in-state win, and more weekend results.
Good morning! We had a long stretch without any college hoops games. But the news? That didn’t stop. Let’s get you caught up.

1. Izzo rails against ex-NBA Draft picks playing college
On Christmas Eve, the college basketball world was sent into a frenzy.
James Nnaji, formerly the No. 31 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, signed with Baylor and was granted four years of eligibility by the NCAA. He will be immediately eligible to play at Baylor this season.
The Bears needed help in the frontcourt. Juslin Bodo Bodo was ruled out for the season and the tallest player receiving minutes this year, Caden Powell, is just 6-9. Nnaji should be a game changer for Baylor and gives Scott Drew an interior presence with a 7-foot-7 wingspan.
When he touches the floor, he will become the first player to ever play college basketball AFTER being drafted to the NBA. The whole situation has resulted in all sorts of backlash and conversations surrounding the state of the game.
How could a player involved in a trade for Karl Anthony Towns play college ball? That’s the current state of the game and it doesn’t sit well with Michigan State coach Tom Izzo.
And it’s not like Izzo’s alone in this. Gonzaga coach Mark Few said Sunday night that the NCAA’s “lack of leadership” is the key problem.
College sports are likely faced with two options: Congress could give the NCAA an anti-trust exemption, or the NCAA could collectively bargain with the players. T
But now, the Wild Wild West continues in college hoops, and it’s not looking like it will end anytime soon.
2. An in-state upset for the ages
Northern Colorado hadn’t beaten Colorado in 89 years … until Sunday.
