1. Villanova cools red hot St. John’s
Fan of clutch shot-making? St. John’s-Villanova was the game for you on Wednesday night. The Wildcats upended the No. 9-ranked Red Storm, who had won 10-straight games, 73-71, to pick up their first Quad 1 win of the season.
One might think that Eric Dixon, the nation’s leading scorer, sealed it. Nope. it was sophomore guard Tyler Perkins who hit a 3-pointer with 8.7 seconds left.

Simeon Wilcher did have a chance to win it for St. John’s, but missed a 3-pointer as time expired.
Senior guard Wooga Poplar led Nova with 22 points, giving him 20+ points for the third time in the past four games. Dixon chipped in 17 points.
Villanova led for more than 27 minutes and shot 53% from the field, the highest mark against St. John’s this season, and the first time a team’s even shot better than 50%. Villanova (15-10, 8-6 in Big East) is playing its best basketball of the season at the right time and have won three straight.
St. John’s (21-4, 12-2) didn’t play to its strengths in this game, attempting 37 3-pointers, which amounted to 61% of its field-goal tries. Per Jared Berson, that’s the highest 3-point attempt rate by St. John’s over the last 20 years. The Red Storm are shooting just 29.1% from deep this season, and their four losses are by a combined seven points.
St. John’s has just a one game lead over Creighton (18-7, 11-3) in the league standings, and Marquette is two games back at 10-4.
2. Duke? It’s back to domination
It appears No. 3 Duke had some anger to release after losing its first ACC game on Saturday.
