1. Houston’s 2027 class taking shape

Kelvin Sampson already had Oneal Delancy committed out of the 2027 class, but he added two notable prospects over the holiday weekend. And with the two commitments, Houston now has the top recruiting class for 2027.

The first commitment came from Darrell Davis, a 6-1 guard hailing from Spire Academy. He will be adding to the great lineage of Kelvin Sampson guards including LJ Cryer, Emanuel Sharp, Milos Uzan and Kingston Flemings. The head coach at Spire Academy, Kevin Boyle, said Davis will impact games immediately at Houston.

“Coach Sampson is clearly one of the premier teachers and coaches in the game, and they play so hard,” Boyle told The Field of 68. “I think Rell will fit perfectly in their system and will really develop and have an incredible career. He’s becoming an elite on-ball defender, and I thought he really improved last year as the season went on getting other guys shots and playing more like a true point guard.”

The Cougars staff then added Derek “Beau” Daniels on Monday, the third overall commit for the Cougs in 2027.

The 6-7 big man recently transferred to Iowa United Prep and played for Team Durant on the Nike EYBL circuit. Even though Daniels is undersized, he could be a force for Kelvin Sampson up front. One source told The Field of 68 he’s a freak athlete and a “baby JoJo Tugler.”

During Peach Jam, Daniels averaged 10.4 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 1.2 stls and 1.4 blks. He said he chose Houston because of the family environment coach Sampson and staff provided.

“They were some of the most genuine and respectful people I’ve met in a long time,” Daniels said. “Me committing there became easy, as they kept telling me what players have done when they got there, and then they either stay or they get to the next level. And that’s what I’m ready for, getting better, winning and working everyday.”
