Upsetting night

No. 1 Purdue and No. 2 Houston both lose on a massive college hoops night that also saw a game-winner for Texas, a career-night from Rob Dillingham, and much more. Plus, Terrence Shannon makes his case.

Now that college football is over, it’s almost like the college hoops gods knew they needed to make a splash on Tuesday.

Did they ever.

1. Does Nebraska’s win spell trouble for Purdue?

No matter how you slice it, Tuesday night was an historic night for college hoops upsets.

It was the first time since Feb. 26, 2022 that No. 1 and No. 2 in the AP poll both lost. But it also was the the 648th day in poll history that the top two teams both faced unranked teams — and just the eighth time both ended up losing.

Oh yeah. Nebraska’s 88-72 win over No. 1 Purdue was the first time the Huskers have beaten a No. 1 team in 41 years. They frustrated the reigning NPOY Zach Edey, and strung together two crucial scoring runs that sealed the win.

“It doesn’t get much bigger than this one, the No. 1 team, the reigning National Player of the Year,” said Nebraska forward Rienk Mast said, who outscored Edey 18-15. “I just see that as a challenge and luckily, the shots were going in in the beginning and gave the team a little spark and everybody started believing.”

Not that it was easy.
