1. Not much changed in Gonzaga’s final WCC media day

Thursday was the last time we’ll see Gonzaga at West Coast Conference media day. (Well, same for Oregon State and Washington State, but neither of them have the Zags’ long history with the league.)

But like in pretty much every other WCC media day you can remember, the Zags were the focal point of the event because they’re the team to beat.

The preseason poll wasn’t the only Gonzaga storyline, either.

Tyon Grant-Foster, a senior wing who transferred from Grand Canyon, was supposed to have a preliminary injunction hearing on Thursday to determine if he’ll be eligible to play this season. That got delayed, and it’s unclear when that’ll happen.

Two Zags who are ready to go are the frontcourt duo of Graham Ike and Braden Huff, who both made the preseason first-team All-WCC list. Saint Mary’s had the most selections on the 10-player list with three: bigs Harry Wessels and Paulius Murauska, and Mikey Lewis, last year’s WCC 6th Man of the Year.

As of now, we have only two scheduled games between Saint Mary’s and Gonzaga, one of the sport’s best rivalries. Gaels coach Randy Bennett wants to continue the series. “It should happen so that it might happen. We should keep playing.” Gonzaga will have 16 non-conference games with its' Pac-12 slate, there should be room.

You can watch more from media day, along with news nuggets below.

  • One former Zag is still in the WCC: Jun Seok Yeo. According to Seattle coach Chris Viktor, the junior forward has been an early standout this offseason, with the plan to “run a lot of sets through Mr. Yeo.” Seattle’s making its WCC debut

  • Santa Clara transfers Gehrig Normand and Chris Tadjo are out indefinitely

  • San Diego coach Steve Lavin called it a “relaunch season” due to the extra revenue and resources for the program. “For the first time since I’ve been at San Diego, we’ve built the roster with dollars. And you see the difference in practice.”

  • Gonzaga assistant Brian Michaelson, who took Mark Few’s place Thursday, dismissed any retirement talk for the coach. His “competitive fire still burns every day.”.

  • What can Saint Mary’s do to return to the Sweet 16: “Rebound … defend … take care of the ball … and be elite on offense.” So far, he’s confident they can do three of those things.

2. What to know from Mountain West media day

The WCC isn’t the only conference holding bidding adieu to programs at a 2025 media day. The Mountain West won’t have Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State and Utah State after this season.

Three of those were picked to finish 1-2-3 in the preseason poll.
