1. Purdue bounces back in a big way
Any lingering questions about Purdue after its 23-point loss to Iowa State on Saturday got answered on Wednesday night. It just took a half to settle in.
That’s the No. 6 Boilermakers turning a 3-point halftime lead into an 85-57 win against Minnesota. The Gophers (5-5, 1-1 in Big Ten) hung around for 20 minutes, but Purdue simply ran away from them with a 21-0 run — its third run of 20-0 or longer this season — that ended up being 29-2 over the first eight minutes of the second half.
“We had to be better defensively,” coach Matt Painter said. “[Jaylen] Crocker-Johnson made some 3s there, we wanted to eliminate that and not let them have their backcuts. And just be better.”
Minnesota shot just 35.7% from the field for 0.873 points per possession, its lowest mark this season.
Purdue (9-1, 2-0) was its usual sparkling offensive self, topping 1.3 ppp for the fourth time this season. It shot 52% from the field and 42% from deep. Braden Smith (15 points, 12 assists, six rebounds, five steals) was stellar with his offensive playmaking, and reached career totals of 1,500 points, 500 rebounds and 500 assists. No Big Ten player’s ever hit those marks.
2. Huskers, RedHawks stay unbeaten — but in different ways
There are still eight unbeaten D-I men’s teams. Wednesday was close, though.
