New top transfer target
Darrion Williams withdraws from NBA Draft and instantly becomes the most in-demand player in the portal. Who's he considering? Plus: Florida lands its go-to point guard, Ole Miss and Kentucky add elite prep prospects, Memphis snags a point guard and much more.
Good morning! It may be May, but who can sleep when so much college basketball news is happening?
Let’s dive in.

1. Everyone’s new favorite stretch 4
The transfer portal has a new No. 1 player. And at least three schools will actively pursue him.
Texas Tech transfer Darrion Williams will withdraw from the NBA Draft and two of the leaders to land him are Kansas and NC State, source told @TheFieldOf68.

Williams is a 6-6 forward who’s atop EvanMiya’s rankings after enjoying a career year as a junior at Texas Tech. He posted highs in points (15.1 ppg), assists (3.6), steals (1.3), but his rebounding was down a bit (5.5 rpg) because he was in the same frontcourt as J.T. Toppin and was used more as a perimeter threat.
He shot a career-worst 43% from the field but he went 48-of-101 from deep (34%). Williams also attempted 12 field goals per game, over 4.5 more than in 2023-24. It’s that ability to stretch a defense and guard opposing forwards that makes him so valuable.
Kansas and N.C. State are courting Williams (he visited Lawrence on Tuesday), though Matt Norlander says Ohio State should be considered the favorite to land Williams.
I’d say Kansas is the best fit. He’s everything the Jayhawks didn’t have the past couple of seasons as a true 4 who can stretch the floor and play alongside Flory Bidunga. How does Williams work at NC State, who is also feverishly pursuing Memphis guard PJ Haggerty?
There’s no doubt that NC State is in desperate need of a proven big. Will Wade’s first squad in Raleigh features three bigs: Butler transfer Colt Langdon and freshman duo Zymicah Wilkins and international recruit Paul Mbiya.
Kansas will be the better team, but Williams would easily have a larger scoring role at NC State. If Haggerty does indeed land with the Wolfpack, pairing Williams with him would be formidable. None of the current NC State bigs have a single stat under their names at the D-1 level. That’s a problem..
But the Jayhawks would have one of the top trios in America with Bidunga, Williams, and freshman phenom Darryn Peterson.
2. Gators get their go-to-guard
It’s a great day week to be a Gator!
Sandwiched in between Ruben Chinyelu’s announcement that he’ll return to Florida and the Gators’ trip to the White House today was Boogie Fland’s visit to Gainesville.
