To the Max
Max Abmas chooses Texas, while Bronny James' recruitment heats up. Plus, we look at the most impactful intraconference transfers
We've reached the final weekend in April, which means the transfer portal will close soon, players will start to withdraw from the NBA Draft, and school will end.
That's my way of saying it's just a few more weeks of significant college hoops news. Let's get to it.
1. Rodney Terry hooks a signature guard in Max Abmas
Texas's week started quite nicely, landing Virginia transfer Kadin Shedrick. Addressing the frontcourt's lack of depth made sense. But some thought coach Rodney Terry needed a bigger name from the portal.
OK then.
I’m coming home🤘🏽

Max Abmas, in case you don't know, is an elite guard.
He was a four-year starter at Oral Roberts, won multiple Summit League Player of the Year Awards and led the program to its first-ever Sweet 16 appearance in 2021. The 6-1 guard averaged 21.9 points per game this past season and shot 37 percent from deep.
It's a great fit for Texas, which lost both Marcus Carr and Sir'Jabari Rice, as well as top-30 combo guard AJ Johnson, who opted for the professional route over college. Pairing Abmas with Tyrese Hunter provides offensive and defense balance, while the frontcourt is set with Shedrick, Dylan Disu and 5-star prospect Ron Holland.
Patience continues to pay off for Rodney Terry.
Other notable transfer moves:
Max Agbonkpolo (Wyoming) to Utah State
BJ Mack (Wofford) to South Carolina
Qudus Wahab (Georgetown) to Penn State
Joseph Yesufu (Kansas) to Washington State
Le'Tre Darthard (Utah Valley) to Oklahoma
CJ Fulton (Lafayette) to Charleston
Jamarion Sharp (Western Kentucky) to Ole Miss
Meanwhile, Arkansas freshman guard Derrian Ford entered the portal.

2. The portal isn't the only place to find talent
Bronny James' long, quiet recruitment process could end up going into June. But if you've been paying attention, you know where he'll play college ball.
But Bronny isn't alone when it comes to 2023 prospects who have yet to commit.
Twelve players could help programs in 2023-24, including former Duke commit Mackenzie Mgbako. The 5-star forward prospect de-committed after two Devils elected to return to school. Mgbako reportedly is down to four options, including St. John's and Kansas.
Two more players reopened their respective recruitments on Thursday: Baye Ndongo, a 6-9 forward from Denver who originally committed to Rutgers and Rashaud Marshall, a 4-star forward from Arkansas who originally committed to Ole Miss.
Neither will earn the attention that Bronny or Mgbako do, but would be a good option for teams who haven't hit in the transfer portal.
3. Five notable intraconference transfers
It used to be verboten to transfer to a conference rival. Coaches often blocked those moves, fans hated it (still do), and some leagues even prevented it.
Thanks to the updated transfer portal rules, it's now more and more common.
Just this week, two St. John's players chose new homes. Posh Alexander, a three-year starter and double-double scorer, is off to the rebuilding Butler Bulldogs. He's a career 25 percent 3-point shooter but is a former Big East Defensive Player of the Year. Unlike most of the other pickups for Butler, he is a proven power conference contributor.
The other is Dylan Addae-Wusu, a 6-4 junior wing coming off a career-high 9.3 points and 4.4 rebounds in 19 starts. He was a glue guy for the Red Storm and could play an even bigger role on a Seton Hall team that needs scoring punch.
Those two are hardly alone. There are at least 20 intraconference transfers from this offseason, and that number could grow if Syracuse transfer Joe Girard picks Clemson over LSU in the coming days. Here are the five most impactful moves.
5. Jordan Wright, Vanderbilt to LSU: The 6-5 wing was a double-digit scorer the past two seasons, making 33 percent of his 3-point attempts. He had a 27-point game against Kentucky as a junior, and his floor-spacing makes him a good fit next to Nevada transfer Will Baker.
4. Avery Anderson, Oklahoma State to TCU: Anderson has been one of the Cowboys' top scorers during his three seasons, including an All-Big 12 season in 2021-22. He's a streaky shooter, a good defender and a capable facilitator. He'll be a reliable option for TCU.
3. Cormac Ryan, Notre Dame to North Carolina: Ryan is coming off a career-high 12.3 ppg on 41 percent shooting from the field and 34 percent from deep. He's a veteran shooting guard who should fit nicely next to RJ Davis. If he can repeat his junior season performance (41 percent from 3), UNC could have a steal here.
2. Jamison Battle, Minnesota to Ohio State: After averaging more than 17 points as a sophomore and junior, Battle was limited to just 12.4 last season. Still, that's better than most players on Ohio State's roster. The Buckeyes bring in a talented freshman class, so Battle should provide consistent scoring for Chris Holtmann.
1. LJ Cryer, Baylor to Houston: Cryer averaged 15 points per game for the Bears, shot 42 percent from 3-point range and notched a 30-point game in the season-finale against Creighton. The 6-1 playmaker is already an All-Big 12 player and now goes to a team that needs to replace leading scorer Marcus Sasser. Cryer should step right into that role and provide essential scoring for the Cougars.
Carolina's fine offseason
With Harrison Ingram heading up four transfers headed to Chapel Hill for 2023-24, how will Hubert Davis make all the pieces fit? Will the Heels have enough shooting around Armando Bacot? Is this is a Top 25 team or a Top 10 team? Rob Dauster and Jeff Goodman discuss.
