1. LinkU Invitational starts exhibition season
We finally got to see our first glimpse of the 26-27 season, and while the games didn’t count, it was nice to see basketball finally being played. In Charleston, Virginia faced Vanderbilt and Charleston took on The Citadel.
The event took place in a unique atmosphere: outdoors at CreditOne Stadium, where tennis is usually played. But without the setting, we wouldn’t have gotten a dueling sunglasses look from Ryan Odom and Mark Byington.
Getting to the basketball, Vanderbilt led 38-34 at half but used a strong second frame to pull away late and win 82-73. Jayden Leverett led the way with 15 points and seven rebounds. Tyler Tanner, who only played in the first half, had 13 points, and Ace Glass, the Washington State transfer, chipped in with 10. It was also notable that Chandler Bing was a starter for the Commodores. He could be set for a major role and leap in production this season.
For Virginia, Elijah Gertrude had 10 while Jan Vide, Thijs De Ridder, and Johnan Grunloh each had eight in a more balanced attack for the Cavaliers. Chance Mallory did not play.
Charleston won the second game 79-69. Eli Ellis and Max Green both looked good under new head coach John Groce, while Aaron Ekwere of The Citadel was phenomenal on the glass for Ed Conroy.
2. Limbo to Lawrence: Tre White recommits to KU
Tre White received his fifth-year of eligibility when an Indiana court provided him an injunction. Kansas wasted no time announcing he’s officially back with the Jayhawks.
