On the move

FAU lands an impact scorer, Kansas State builds out its bench and Wyoming may lose its coach to Texas Tech. All that plus much more.

Teams that have been building from the ground up this offseason continues to find pieces for next season. And thanks to a new NCAA rule, it could get easier to fill out their respective rosters without running out of visits.

Let's get to Thursday’s news

1. Florida Atlantic adds some scoring punch

When Baylor assistant John Jakus was hired to replace Dusty May, he noted that none of the Owls has entered the transfer portal. That only lasted a few days as everyone left except forward Tre Carroll.

So Jakus has been doing what most new coaches do: Building out his roster via the portal. And his latest addition should provide quite a bit of scoring.

Tandy is FAU’s most notable newcomer yet, coming off an All-CUSA season at Jacksonville State.

The 6-2 guard led the team with 17.8 ppg on 42% shooting from the field and 39% from deep. Tandy had a pair of 30+ point games, including 35 against Florida International when he nailed 7-of-12 from beyond the arc. He’s got loads of experience, too.

This will be Tandy’s sixth college season. He made the All-Big East freshman team while at Xavier, where he played 70 games over four seasons. Last season was his most productive by far, but also his most efficient as a scorer (106.9 ORtg).

With Tandy on board, Florida Atlantic has a good trio of new guards, joining Eastern Kentucky transfer Leland Walker (15.4 ppg and 4.1 apg), and A.J. Staton-McCray, a 6-5 guard coming off 11.5 ppg and 4.5 rpg at Samford. Add former top-100 prospect and Louisville forward Kaleb Glenn and it’s a solid core of newcomers.

Expect the Owls to fill out at least some of their four remaining roster spots with big men, as incoming freshman Mantas Kocanas the only true big on the roster.

2. Keeping up with the Joneses

Kansas State has taken its shot with quite a few transfers this spring. It reportedly was in the mix for Khalif Battle and Cliff Omoruyi, among others, but had yet to add a proven scorer alongside Michigan transfer Dug McDaniel.

That changed on Thursday.
