Another historic night of upsets
A day after No. 1 & 2 lose, Top 25 teams Kansas, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Marquette and Clemson all lose. Also, Louisville wins on the road. What? Plus, Four Questions with Samford coach Bucky McMillan
OK, I know college football just ended and it’s now college basketball’s time to take center stage, but let’s pace ourselves, shall we?
Time to take stock of another wild night.
1. It’s tough out there for the top teams
Winning on the road in college hoops is tougher than ever. Just ask … anyone.
A day after No. 1 Purdue and No. 2 Houston both lost on the road, No. 3 Kansas lost at UCF, No. 5 Tennessee lost to Miss State, No. 9 Oklahoma lost at TCU, and No. 21 Clemson lost at Virginia Tech. Throw in No. 11 Marquette losing at home to Butler, and we’re left with chaos among the sport’s top teams.
How about some factoids to underscore how wild the last two nights were?
It’s the first time ever that four of the Top 5 teams last to unranked teams in a span of two days.
The last time the top three teams in the AP poll lost was the 2004 NCAA Tournament. It’s the first time in the regular season since 1995.
Top 15 teams on the road against unranked teams this season are 17-20.
Home teams in the top 7 conferences are winning 66% of their league games, up from 61% the previous two seasons.
No loss summed up Wednesday better than UCF’s 65-60 win over the Jayhawks.
