1. Did Kansas State get P.J. Haggerty for a bargain?
Who knew Memorial Day weekend deals could be so fruitful?
Kansas State landed one of the transfer portal’s biggest names on Monday in P.J. Haggerty. And depending on the various NIL reports, the Wildcats might’ve gotten a relative bargain.
The 6-3 guard starred at Memphis this season, averaging 21.7 ppg, 5.8 rpg and 3.7 apg, which earned him consensus second-team All-American status for a Tigers team that swept the AAC regular-season and conference tournament titles. Memphis reportedly offered him $3 million for another season, but Haggerty entered the portal in search of a $4 million payday.
That seemed to point him toward N.C. State, but the Wolfpack spent their money elsewhere. So K-State stepped in and not only upgraded their backcourt and overall prospects for 2025-26, but did it for a reported $2.5 million NIL deal. That’s obviously a terrific payday. Yet it seems Haggerty couldn’t quite get the market deal he wanted.
Now it’ll be interesting to see how Haggerty performs in the Big 12, and how he plays alongside the other backcourt mates. It’s safe to assume that Akron transfer David Johnson (another guard with size who gets to the free-throw line) will be the other starter, while returner David Castillo and Monmouth transfer Abdi Bashir Jr. will be the other keyt guards.
Haggerty instantly raises the floor at K-State — their preseason Torvik ranking jumped from 68 to 44 — but the ceiling is still TBD given the frontcourt is relatively undersized in Memphis transfer Tyreek Smith and UNC Wilmington transfer Khamari McGriff. (Also, I can’t wait to see who Memphis and K-State swap next year.)
If nothing else, K-State should be a consistent offensive team that finishes in the top half of the Big 12. Whether that’s good enough for an NCAA tourney bid remains to be seen.
2. Duke adds yet another player on the wing
Cedric Coward officially said on Saturday that he’s staying in the NBA Draft. Not to worry Duke fans. The Devils prepared for this.
