1. Several players eligible after Indiana preliminary injunction
It’s been quiet in the courtroom as of late, but we had a major update in the college basketball world on Wednesday.
A few players named in the lawsuit are expected to return to their previous schools, including Sam Alexis (Indiana), Tamin Lipsey (Iowa State), Tre White (Kansas), Malik Reneau (Miami), Elijah Mahi (Santa Clara) and Kenyon Giles (Wichita State). Former Georgia forward Justin Abson, also named in the lawsuit, signed with Wake Forest.
Alexis would give Indiana even more depth in the frontcourt alongside transfers Aiden Sherrell and Samet Yigitoglu. Lipsey would be one of the best point guards in college basketball and helps alleviate the pressure of Killyan Toure’s injury.
As for White, he’d allow Kansas to possibly play Tyran Stokes at the 2, forming a lineup of Taylen Kinney/Leroy Blyden, Stokes, White, Keanu Dawes and Paul Mbiya/Christian Reeves. That would be one of the biggest teams in the country. The Jayhawks could also slide Dawes down to a small-ball five with White and Stokes’ rebounding upside.
With Reneau returning to Miami, it’d be hard to not have the Hurricanes as a top-15 team preseason. They’d be returning three starters, including their leading scorer in Reneau, to go with a highly-ranked transfer haul.
Lastly, Giles and Mahi would both be huge pieces to help Wichita State and Santa Clara push for an auto-bid in their respective leagues, or even an at-large.
In other eligibility news, the Supreme Court of Ohio denied a motion to vacate the stay of the injunction issued by the Ohio Court of Appeals. That means names like MJ Collins (Cincinnati), Javon Bennett (Gonzaga), Keyshawn Hall (St. John’s) and Filip Borovicanin (Xavier) are still (currently) ineligible until the case is resolved.
2. Two west coast schools land 2027 commits
The high school commits keep pouring in, and Utah and Oregon State both picked up 2027 prospects.
