1. The latest fifth-year commits
In light of the court rulings and injunctions as of late, we’ve had a handful of fifth-year transfer commits throughout the week. Two more players made decisions on Thursday that could really impact college basketball next season.
First, Houston picked up former Texas guard Chendall Weaver. The 6-3 guard averaged 5.8 points and 4.1 rebounds as a senior for the Longhorns, and he’s known as a lockdown defender with elite athleticism. That fits like a glove with Houston, and Kelvin Sampson has previously had high praise for the guard.
“I think their best defensive guard is Weaver,” Sampson said after a January 2024 overtime win vs. Texas. “He knows how to use his athleticism. When you have a kid like him setting the standard, that makes the other guys better.”
Moving onto Gonzaga, Mark Few landed his second commitment in as many days, as former Florida State wing Chauncey Wiggins chose the Zags. His length/skill combo at 6-10 is what stands out. Last season as a Seminole, Wiggins averaged 13.3 points and 3.9 rebounds while shooting 38.7% from 3.
The wing is yet another floor spacer Gonzaga can utilize, and Mark Few will have one of the biggest lineups in college basketball next season 2-5 because of this addition: Javon Bennett (5-10), Davis Fogle (6-7), Wiggins (6-10), Braden Huff (6-10) and Massamba Diop (7-1).
To me, the Zags are an All-Conference caliber starting point guard (like Donovan Dent) away from being a true national title contender.
In other fifth year news, Penn State senior forward Josh Reed (11.5 ppg, 4.1 rpg) will returning to school, as will Quinnipiac senior guard Asim Jones (12.5 ppg, 3.9 apg).
2. Georgia Tech, Grand Canyon enjoy foreign tour wins
It was a nail-biter for the Yellow Jackets on Thursday, but Georgia Tech was able to squeak by Dalhousie University, 90-89 in overtime, to close out its Bahamas foreign tour undefeated.
