One Death, Higher Taxes

Here's the math most couples never see coming.

When one spouse passes, the survivor usually keeps most of the household income — but starts filing as a single taxpayer. Same IRA. Same required distributions. Roughly half the standard deduction, and tax brackets that compress to nearly twice the rate at the same income.

It's called the survivor's tax trap, and it's one of the most preventable problems in retirement — if you act while both spouses are alive and rates are still low.

Craig Wear, CFP®, has walked 3,000+ families with $1M+ in IRAs through exactly this planning. His new book, Roth Conversion Reset, lays out the year-by-year framework for converting at today's rates so the tax problem never lands on the person you love most.

1. Indiana wins gold, Oklahoma State rolls in Puerto Rico

Indiana represented Team USA at the annual FISU World University Games over the past two weeks, playing four games.

On Monday, the Hoosiers easily handled the US Virgin Islands in the title game to win the Gold Medal, 99-57. Villanova transfer Bryce Lindsay led the team with 17 points, one of six double-digit scorers on the afternoon.

Because of the clear talent disparity between the Hoosiers and the competition, there’s not too much to take away when looking ahead to the 2026-27 season. Still, there are some things to note from the past week:

  • Alabama transfer Aiden Sherrell looked to be a potential focal point of the offense, averaging 14.5 ppg. He also showed the kind of floor-spacing ability the team didn't have last season.

  • With SMU transfer Samet Yigitoglu unable to play since he’s not an American, “former” Indiana forward Sam Alexis filled in for him. He averaged 13 ppg over three games and provided them with frontcourt depth. We’ll see if Alexis ends up a candidate to look for a 5th year of eligibility as well.

  • The freshman class showed plenty of potential, including Prince-Alexander Moody (12.3 ppg) and Vaughn Karvala, who had the highest-scoring game of any Hoosier with 32 points against Peru and led the team with 16.3 ppg throughout the event.

Oklahoma State also played on Monday, winning 120-92 over the Seleccion BSN in the San Juan Summer Shootout in Puerto Rico. Five Cowboys were in double figures, led by 18 points from Parker Robinson and 17 from Latrell Allmond, both of whom are incoming freshmen.

2. Biggest takeaways from SEC schedule release

The SEC league schedule came out on Monday with Jan. 2, 2027, as the date of the first set of games.
