Tis the season for big wins

FAU topples No. 4 Arizona, Illinois claims bragging rights, and UConn wins even without Donovan Clingan. Plus, Louisville's keeping Payne (for now) and much more.

What’s this? The Field of 68 Daily on a Sunday? You bet. We had enough hoops the last two days that a post was warranted — not to mention some decent news — and there won’t be one on Monday because, you know, Christmas. And, since there are no games on Monday and Tuesday, we won’t send another Daily until Wednesday.

So happy holidays. And thanks for subscribing to the Daily.

Let's get to the news.

1. Owls spread their wings against Arizona

Florida Atlantic earned fame during its run to the 2023 Final Four. On Saturday, it earned its spot among the college hoops elite with a 95-94 overtime win against No. 2 Arizona.

Now, you’ve subscribed to a college hoops newsletter. You’re probably not the type to dismiss a team that won 35 games last season, and is currently 14th in the AP poll and 11th on kenpom.com. But there are FAU skeptics out there, probably because before 2023, FAU was 1-19 against AP ranked teams.

Forget all that upstart stuff (even if the team’s Twitter handle had fun with it). This was earned.
