Fab freshman
Caleb Wilson 'ignites' North Carolina vs. Florida State. How good is this freshman? Plus: The NCAA's stance on NBA players, Duke's latest recruiting win, why the Southland is still a power, Miami, Nebraska stay unbeaten, Seton Hall slogs to a win, and more from Tuesday.
Good morning! The NCAA issued a statement Tuesday regarding professional players and college eligibility: “The NCAA has not and will not grant eligibility to any prospective or returning student-athletes who have signed an NBA contract."
Basically, the G League is OK. Europe is OK. Getting any kind of time in the NBA? Nope.
Now, let’s get to the rest of Tuesday’s news.

1. Caleb Wilson ‘just ignites’ North Carolina
How important is one player to a team’s upside? Just watch North Carolina with Caleb Wilson and you’ll see.
No. 12 North Carolina earned a 79-66 against Florida State Tuesday in its ACC opener. The Tar Heels limited Florida State to 11-of-26 (42%) on 2s and 12-of-40 (30%) from 3. Normally, that type of defense would be enough to win handily, but the Seminoles (7-7, 0-1 in ACC) kept things close until UNC (13-1, 1-0) pulled away with an 18-3 run in the second half.
The ignition switch? Wilson, the freshman phenom. He scored 26 points (9-of-16 from the floor) with a 16 rebounds and a career-high six assists. Few players have been better than Wilson this season.
But the stats don’t tell the whole story. For that, you really need video.
Wilson was the energizer for UNC. He was essential to North Carolina stretching out the lead to double-digits in the second-half.
“His (Wilson) personality and his game personality just lights up a room,” coach Hubert Davis said. “Whether it’s a steal or a rebound or a dunk, it just ignites us. He has that type of effect on this team and the crowd and we feed off of that.”
Wilson’s so good, expect to hear more about his as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 draft — and to push Cam Boozer as the ACC POY.
Seth Trimble also added 20 points for the Heels, and Henri Veesaar pitched in with a double-double.
North Carolina heads to Dallas to face a dangerous SMU team on Saturday.
2. RedHawks pull off an upset, stay unbeaten
Oddsmakers figured Miami of Ohio would leave the unbeaten ranks on Tuesday night. They figured wrong.
