Night of stars
Whether it was Duke freshmen, a UNC senior, Villanova's big man, or a swarming defense, Wednesday night had something for everyone. Plus: the WCC is adding Pac-12 schools, Louisville preps for Kentucky, and more.
Oregon State and Washington State will have a new hoops home in the West Coast Conference — at least for 2024-25 and 2025-26. School presidents and ADs are expected to vote on the move this morning, meaning they’ll be eligible to win the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
As for the rest of Wednesday’s news, including four heavyweight matchups and a big upset, let’s dive in.
1. Duke’s young Devils deliver vs. Baylor
When Tyrese Proctor suffered a foot injury on three weeks ago against Georgia Tech, it was clear No. 21 Duke needed one of its talented freshmen to step up in his place.
How about two?
Jared McCain scored a game-high 21 points and Caleb Foster added an efficient 12 points in 34 minutes, while splitting point guard duties with Jeremy Roach. The result? An impressive 78-70 win against No. 10 Baylor at Madison Square Garden. Go ahead Jared, revel a bit.
“I was just able to find my spots. I work on these shots every day,” McCain said. “I’m in New York at Christmas time, going to see the Rockefeller tree tomorrow. ... There’s no words to describe it. Just amazing."
If it seems like McCain’s elevated his game since Proctor’s injury, you’re right.
