Coaching carousel speeds up
Creighton starts a new era, Arizona State and Cincinnati adjust to life in the Big 12, while UNC weighs its future with Hubert Davis. Plus: There's NIT basketball tonight, thoughts on why there weren't many upsets this season, and a rundown of planned portal activity.
Good morning! We’re in the heart of coaching carousel season, and transfer portal madness officially starts in two weeks.
Let’s get to Monday’s news.

In the coaching world, the carousel can be a leading cause of chaos at home. Let’s be honest: a sudden move is one of the most stressful events a marriage can face, and in over 70% of relocations, the spouse is left to shoulder that burden alone.
At D1.relocation, we like to think of our services as a form of "divorce insurance." By providing a dedicated Director of Relocation Operations (DORO) to handle the logistics, we protect your family’s peace of mind so the move doesn't move you apart.

1. It was a busy day on the coaching carousel
Two Big 12 programs hired new coaches on Monday, while a Big East program made a planned transition off its most successful coach in school history. And that was just for starters!
Creighton announced that Greg McDermott will retire and hand the reigns to assistant Alan Huss. Huss previously coached two seasons at High Point, spent this past season as a Bluejay assistant, and was the planned successor.
McDermott’s 365-188 in 16 seasons at Creighton, which included 14 20+ win seasons, 10 NCAA tourney trips, three Sweet 16 appearances and a spot in the 2023 Elite Eight.
“It has been an incredible honor to lead the Creighton men’s basketball program for the past 16 years,” said McDermott. “I’m very proud of the young men that have proudly worn the Bluejay uniform and represented our program in a first-class manner.”
Arizona State found its Bobby Hurley successor in one of the sport’s most consistent winners.
Randy Bennett, who won nearly 72% of his games over the last 25 seasons at Saint Mary’s, will attempt to establish the Sun Devils as a consistent Big 12 program. If they come close to the Gaels’ success — they’ve won 77% of their games over the past 10 seasons and made seven NCAA Tournaments — they’ll build him a statue.
Cincinnati will hire Utah State coach Jerrod Calhoun.
That’ll be a stark departure from how the Bearcats played the last five seasons. Calhoun’s teams play a free-flowing offense and finished in the Top 30 of adjusted efficiency the last two seasons.
He went 55-15 in two years with the Aggies, reached two NCAA Tournaments, and won a tourney game this season. He previously spent seven seasons at Youngstown State, and five seasons at D-II Fairmont State, where his team finished as runner-up in 2016-17.
Can’t wait to see who Utah State grabs next. Quite the coaching standard to meet!
In other coaching news:
Charlotte hired former Cincinnati and UNC Greensboro coach Wes Miller.
Saint Mary’s will elevate assistant Mickey McConnell to head coach.
Phil Martelli Jr. inked a contract extension at VCU through 2031-32.
Butler reportedly will announce a hire later this week, per the Indianapolis Star. Travis Steele is not on the list.
2. North Carolina’s still deciding about Davis’ future
Hubert Davis’ tenure as North Carolina’s coach remains up in the air.
