Coaching (and portal) Buzz

Maryland moved quickly to fill its coaching vacancy, leaving Texas A&M to search for its next coach. Plus: Louisville's building quite the backcourt for 2025-26, Michigan State lost a vibes star, notes from the McDonald's All-American game, and a thrilling NIT semifinals.

Good morning! Even without NCAA Tournament games, we’ve had plenty of news — and even some decent games to keep us busy.

Let's get to it.

1. Buzz Williams’ latest move? Maryland

Buzz Williams has bounced around from head coaching job to head coaching job, but at least he’s been consistent with his timing.

The former Texas A&M coach was officially announced as Maryland’s next coach on Tuesday, replacing Kevin Willard. Williams coached Marquette for six seasons from 2008-2014, then Virginia Tech from 2014-19 before Texas A&M from 2019-2025. If history tells us anything, Williams will be at Maryland for five to six seasons.

"It is an honor and privilege to be named the head coach of the University of Maryland men's basketball team," Williams said. "I want to thank President Pines and Colleen Sorem for this opportunity to lead one of the most prestigious programs in the country. In leading this program, I promise to uphold the history of Maryland basketball and make Terp Nation proud with the men who represent this institution."

Williams has amassed a record of 373-228 in his 18-year head coaching career. He’s taken Marquette, Virginia Tech and Texas A&M each to the NCAA Tournament three or more times and won 100+ games at each school.

Once Williams hits the sidelines for Maryland next season, he will have coached an ACC, Big East, Big Ten and SEC school. He looks to join a small group as the third Division I head coach to secure 100 or more victories at four different institutions, following in the footsteps of Maryland hall of fame coach Lefty Driesell and Nevada’s Steve Alford.

"We are thrilled to bring a coach of the caliber of Buzz Williams to the University of Maryland," Interim Director of Athletics Colleen Sorem said. "His incredible record of success at three prominent basketball programs speaks for itself, but we were equally impressed with his tireless work ethic and his dedication to building a program the right way. He embraces the high expectations here at Maryland and we are all excited to get started on this new era in Maryland basketball."

As for Texas A&M, Jeff Goodman reported that Ole Miss coach Chris Beard will be one of the primary candidates to replace Williams.
