Three weeks in

Don't dismiss the impressive starts from BYU, Colorado State and Nebraska (!). Here's why. Plus, everything that mattered from the Feast Week finales, including impressive outings from FAU, Villanova, Baylor and more.

Hope you tuned into The Field of 68 last night. Not only did Jeff Goodman and Terrence Oglesby distill the big stories from the weekend, they also welcomed a new contributor: Hall of Fame coach Jim Boeheim.

I’ll dive into Boeheim’s thoughts and everything else that mattered below.

1. After 3 weeks, 3 under-the-radar teams worth watching

Of the Big 12’s four new teams this season, Houston was the obvious incoming power. The Cougars (7-0) are currently atop kenpom.com, are ranked 6th in the AP and coaches’ poll, and might not lose a game until February.

But in true Big 12 fashion, there’s more than just one team to watch.

BYU is 6-0 with wins over San Diego State and NC State, not to mention a 77-49 throttling of Arizona State on Thursday. The Cougars are currently 10th on kenpom, a 26-point jump since the start of the season. And if you remove any preseason weighting — any good ratings system includes that — BYU is rated No. 4 at barttorvik.

Forget the last two seasons when BYU was a WCC also-ran. With a top 20 offense and defense, it’s also likely to enter conference play unbeaten. Only a trip to Utah on Dec. 9 presents much of a challenge.

This isn’t just a team grinding out wins, either. The Cougars are a fun watch, rebound like mad — and can be quite frisky.
