1. Four players shut the door on college returns

The usual pre-NBA Draft decision limbo of ā€œwill he stay or will he go?ā€ Four players clarified their thoughts on Wednesday.

They’re all turning pro:

  • Arizona would love to have Carter Bryant for his sophomore season. That’s not happening. The 6-8 wing told Jeff Borzello that ā€œI’m completely in. I’m completely in.ā€ He averaged just 6.5 ppg last season, but teams love his mix of shooting and size.

  • Some wondered if Thomas Sorber left the door open a bit for a sophomore season at Georgetown. Nope. ā€œYeah, I’m 100% in the draft,ā€ he told Kevin Sweeney. The 6-10 big man missed the last few weeks of the season due to a foot injury, but that hasn’t derailed his draft stock. After a season in which he averaged 14.5 ppg, 8.5 rpg and 2 bpg, he’s seen a mid-first rounder.

  • Labaron Philon started 29 games for Alabama this season. That’ll be it. Per Borzello, the Bama coaching was preparing for the 6-3 guard to stay in the draft. ā€œThey weren’t surprised. They knew it already.ā€

  • Drake Powell is one of the best athletes in this draft. And despite modest production during his freshman season at North Carolina (7.4 ppg, 3.4 rpg), he’s staying the draft. In fact, he didn’t sound too pleased with how his freshman season went.

Still, if you’re a college hoops fan, there’s some hope for a few star players returning school.

  • Yaxel Lendeborg is ā€œdead in the middleā€ of staying in the NBA or playing at Michigan next season. The 6-9 forward is a projected first-round pick, but he wants a guarantee. ā€œI know I just said 60-40 with Michigan, man, but this whole process is really opening my eyes,ā€ he said, via On3.com. ā€œI feel like now I’m definitely equal. I’m super stuck — quicksand, whatever you want to call it. I’m stuck in between, for sure.ā€

  • Tahaad Pettiford also wants a first-round guarantee. If he doesn’t get that from any team, he’ll be at Auburn for his sophomore season.

  • That’s the approach Houston guard Milos Uzan is taking. Otherwise he’ll return for his senior season.

  • Florida forward Alex Condon would be one of the SEC’s top forward next season. And there’s a chance it still happens. He told reporters that ā€œI gotta get that almost guaranteed [to stay in draft]. I know I’m in that 20 to 35 range right now but you know, I’ve got a good situation waiting for me at Florida. It has to be a good situation for me to stay [in draft] but feedback I’m getting from teams right now is positive and I’m ready to stay in if I need to.ā€

  • The same applies to new Duke wing Cedric Coward. He’s keeping his options open depending on the feedback he receives. ā€œI’m 100% focusing on the draft. At the end of the day, the decision I make is going to be based on the information I get. Right now, the information is definitely leaning towards staying in the draft but at the end of the day, we gotta figure out the best decision to make for myself and my family as I go forward.ā€

  • San Diego State’s Miles Byrd told the San Diego Union-Tribune that he’s ā€œon the fence,ā€ about returning to school. Any decision the 6-7 guard makes won’t be until later.

  • Otega Oweh wouldn’t mind playing at Kentucky next season. But he told reporters that if he gets great feedback, he’ll stay in the draft.

  • Arkansas wing Adou Thiero was seen as likely to stay in the draft, but this doesn’t sound as certain to me. ā€œThe door is not completely shut, but we should know more this week. For me, the door is kinda closed but my circle around, they want to hear more great things to finally shut that door.ā€

The next few weeks will certainly have an impact on several teams’ 2025-26 outlook.
