1. Maryland secures first 2027 commit

After an inconsistent year one in College Park, Buzz Williams is hoping his program will continue to progress. Williams has had success everywhere he’s been, from Marquette to Virginia Tech to Texas A&M, but it’s usually taken time to get going.

Over the weekend, Maryland landed a potential game-changer for the future in class of 2027 combo guard Payton Jones. He chose the Terps over Clemson, Oklahoma State, and Cincinnati.

Jones, the 6-2 combo guard out of Dynamic Prep (TX), gets Maryland on the board in the 2027 class. He’s predominantly known as a scorer and should be one of the next elite scoring guards under Buzz Williams. Jones is from the same area as former Texas A&M standout Wade Taylor.

The decision from Jones came shortly after his official visit.

“My biggest takeaway from the visit was how comfortable I felt around the coaches, players, and the whole program,” Jones told 247Sports. “I believe I fit into coach Buzz’s system because I’m a two-way guard who scores at all three levels and defends at a high level.”

Jones is ranked as the No. 37 overall recruit in the 2027 class per 247Sports. He also averaged 20 ppg for the Gulf Coast Blue Chips on the Under Armour circuit this summer.

2. Fifth-year LJ Wells chooses Louisville

The fifth-year hopefuls keep committing, and Louisville continues to take advantage. The Cardinals already had one impact fifth-year transfer commitment in Seth Trimble. Northern Kentucky’s LJ Wells has now been added to a deep roster.
