1. Quite the night atop the Big Ten
I’m not sure anyone enjoyed Tuesday night more than Michigan.
The Wolverines avenged an earlier loss to No. 7 Purdue, got its first win vs. a top 10 team in the Dusty May era AND are all alone atop the Big Ten AFTER rival Michigan State lost a shocker to Indiana. That’s a great night. Not that it was easy.
No. 20 Michigan (19-5, 11-2 in Big Ten) had turnover issues for the first 12 minutes, and trailed by 11 before cutting Purdue’s lead to just two by halftime. The Boilers (19-6, 10-3) led by eight with nine minutes left, but the Wolverines were relentless in front of the home crowd. leading to an 11-point deficit, but a late surge cut the lead to 37-35 at the break.
By the time Rubin Jones punctuated a 7-0 run during the final 2:48, one thought the Crisler Center would burst.

Two dramatic Braden Smith 3-pointers made it close, and Purdue even had a chance for a desperation 3 at the buzzer, but Smith’s shot was off.
Wolf led the Wolverines with 15 points and nine rebounds. Roddy Gayle Jr. (14 points) was great off the bench, while Vlad Goldin and Tre Donaldson each added 12 points as well.
Then it was time for Wolverines fans to watch No. 11 Michigan State.
Indiana hadn’t won in a month, and the Spartans were set to celebrate Tom Izzo becoming the all-time Big Ten wins leader. They looked ready, taking an eight-point lead midway through the first half, but Indiana (15-10, 6-8) used big men Oumar Ballo and Malik Reneau to claw back and eventually pull out a 71-67 victory.
The Spartans (19-5, 10-3) had no answer inside as Ballo (14 points, 10 rebounds) and Reneau (19 and 12) dominated. That MSU went 4-of-23 from beyond the arc also didn’t help. Mike Woodson shifting Indiana to a 2-3 zone certainly played its part.
Michigan State has now lost three of its last four, and is a game behind Michigan in the league standings, while Purdue is half a game back. That league is going to be so much fun down the stretch.
2. No guards? No problem for Kentucky vs. Vols
No. 15 Kentucky entered Tuesday’s home game vs. No. 5 Tennessee without guard Jaxson Robinson, or backup point guard Kerr Kriisa. And then it lost starting PG Lamont Butler in the second half?.
That should’ve doomed the Wildcats against a nasty defense like Tennessee.
