1. NCAA considering eligibility rule changes
Eligibility rules have been a hot-button topic across college sports recently, especially in college basketball with the influx of international prospects and court cases for domestic players seeking an additional season.
We might be nearing a world where that’s all cleared up.
Per a report from Ross Dellenger on Wednesday, the NCAA is looking at modifying eligibility rules, with possible implementation as early as the 2026-27 academic year.
The main components of the proposal:
Shifting to a five-year eligibility window tied to age, not seasons played, where the clock would start at either the athlete’s 19th birthday or high school graduation.
No more redshirts, waivers or other loopholes to regain seasons. Five years, that’s it. Only exceptions would be military service, maternity leave and religious missions.
The goal here seems to be eliminating chaos — something everyone can get behind. Because right now, eligibility could depend on what court room you’re in.
Next week, the Division I Cabinet will discuss the proposal, but when, or even if it gets approved, is still up in the air. And even if it passes, Dellenger reports “any implementation is expected to be phased in” to help avoid affecting current athletes.
The idea also similarly aligns with Donald Trump’s executive order to “save” college sports.
2. Top bigs in the portal … and their worth
Michigan played three bigs in its starting lineup, dominated the paint all season long and ended winning the national title.
We may be starting to see the ripple effects in this year’s transfer portal.
