1. Another huge loss for Gonzaga
Earlier this offseason, Gonzaga was expected to have one of the best backcourts in the country with the international duo of returning point guard Mario Saint-Supery and newcomer Jack Kayil.
The Zags have now lost both players in the last 20 days, with Saint-Supery announcing his return to Spain on Friday and Kayil having previously been selected with the No. 39 overall pick in the NBA Draft.
Both decisions came as somewhat of a shock, as nobody really expected Kayil to head to the draft, and Saint-Supery was practicing at Gonzaga 24 hours prior to the decision.
Saint-Supery’s father, Kiko, told a local reporter the move was strictly a “basketball decision.” The point guard will also reportedly make over $15 million across his four-year deal with Valencia.
For Gonzaga, it’s a huge loss, and Mark Few now probably has to find some answers at the point guard spot. The Zags have a commitment from French guard Nathan De Sousa, but he’ll need a waiver to be eligible.
Gonzaga recently signed French guard Juwan Ekanga-Ehawa as well, but he’s expected to be in more of a development role next year. As it stands, there really aren’t any starting caliber guards on the roster, and wings like Isiah Harwell and Davis Fogle may have to carry some of the ball handling load.
With just eight spots on the roster officially filled, I’d expect Mark Few to make a few moves to improve the roster and help at the guard spot. Still, having two of your projected starters jump ship in June/July is far from ideal.
2. Michigan officially inks Mike Boynton
The interim tag for Mike Boynton is no more. Michigan officially announced he’ll be the next head coach of the Wolverines on Friday.
