1. RJ Luis granted injunction to play at LSU

Of the current lawsuits across the country involving college basketball, 99% of them have been about players seeking a fifth year after the NCAA excluded them from its new age-based eligibility rule.

Technically, former St. John’s guard RJ Luis would qualify, as he’s also in the class of 2022. 

But Luis left for the NBA Draft following his junior year after earning Big East Player of the Year honors (18.2 ppg and 7.2 rpg). He went undrafted in the 2025 draft before signing a two-way deal with the Utah Jazz. Normally, that would end a player’s college eligibility. But a judge in Baton Rouge felt differently, granting Luis an injunction to become eligible for the LSU Tigers immediately.

We saw a similar scenario last season, when Alabama center Charles Bediako joined the team mid-year after leaving early for the draft two years ago. He too was granted a temporary injunction, playing five games before a later ruling denied it, ending his season and college career for good.

Time will tell whether Luis ever suits up for LSU. But if he does, they’ll have one of the oldest and most experienced lineups in the country:

• Donovan Dent (UCLA): 13.3 ppg and 7.6 rpg

• Skyy Clark (UCLA): 11.5 ppg (40% from 3)

• RJ Luis (St. John’s): 18.2 ppg two years ago

• Mouhamed Dioubate (Kentucky): 8.8 ppg

• Brice Dessert: 6’11 international big man

Bench: Kansas State transfer wing Abdi Bashir Jr. (13.2 ppg), Michigan State transfer guard Divine Ugochukwu (5.0 ppg), UTSA transfer guard Austin Nunez (9.8 ppg), international wing Saliou Niang, international forwards Marcio Santos and Michael Ruzic

A lineup featuring both Dent and Luis will have big shooting concerns since the frontcourt players haven’t shown the ability to space the floor either. But from a talent standpoint, LSU will be loaded on the perimeter. 

That is, assuming they can get this roster fully eligible come November 2nd. 

Other fifth-year player news:

• After originally entering the transfer portal, Clemson starting guard Dillon Hunter (7.5 ppg and 3.0 apg) has elected to return to the Tigers.

• Colorado gained the commitment of 7-0 center Iaroslav Niagu, who averaged 4.2 ppg and 5.1 rpg in 17 starts at Jacksonville State last season.

2. Michigan loses to Lithuanian “B” Team in exhibition

After losing by 12 points to the Lithuanian National Team, the Michigan Wolverines faced the Lithuanian B Team on Monday. The second game was a back-and-forth affair, but Michigan’s offense struggled in the second half, scoring just 31 points to fall 82-77 and to 0-2 on the trip.
