St. Thomas may be the team to beat, but we've got all the news to know from the league's media event. Plus: Big Ten announces its preseason awards, West Virginia and High Point land commitments, Grambling State won't have a key player this season, Duke makes a splashy hire and much more.
Hello! Hope you’re ready for another day filled with media coverage. The Field of 68’s focus will continue its focus on the ACC, which runs from 9 am - 4pm ET . Watch it on X.com/Twitter or on YouTube. (We’ll have full coverage of the two-day event in Thursday’s Daily.)
We’ll get to the news after this message.

1. What to know from Summit League media day
I love the Summit League. Few conferences showcase a more wide-open, entertaining style of basketball. And the league’s annual media day mimics that with plenty of personality.
But first, some awards:

St Thomas, who is eligible for the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 2026, earned the top spot in the preseason poll with 17 first place votes. Reining champ Omaha (13 votes) and South Dakota State (1) were the only other programs to earn first-place votes.
All-League First team:
Carter Bjerke, Forward, St. Thomas
Isaac Bruns, Guard, South Dakota
Kalen Garry, Guard, South Dakota State
Nolan Minessale, Forward, St. Thomas
Tony Osburn, Guard, Omaha
Jayson Petty, Guard, Kansas City
Second Team:
Noah Feddersen, Forward North Dakota State
Ja'Sean Glover, Guard, Omaha
Carson Johnson, Guard, Denver
Eli King, Guard, North Dakota
Markhi Strickland, Forward, North Dakota State
Now, let’s get into what you may have missed if you didn’t watch Rob Dauster and Alex Heinert chat with players and coaches around the league.
Denver hired a highly successful D-II coach in Tim Bergstraser. "When I was at the D-II level, especially the NSSC, we knew that it was Division I basketball. And for those two guys, Carson (Johnson) and Logan (Kinsey), we told them, I believe they're Division I players and if we're not getting those kind of guys you're not going to compete at the upper level of that league."
Johnny Tauer is the king of retention. How else to explain the Tommies’ expectations? "What we've been able to accomplish, a lot of that speaks to our players just buying in. And in this era where it's relatively transient, we've only had five kids go in the transfer portal in five years."
North Dakota State guard Damari Wheeler-Thomas is eager to play after missing all last season with a leg injury. "I think he's as healthy as he's ever been," coach Dave Richman said. "I think probably mentally, he's as healthy as he's ever been, meaning from a ‘I trust my leg now.’"
Oral Roberts coach Kody Barnett, a former assistant for Darien DeVries at West Virginia, could have left for his hometown Indiana when DeVries got the job, but that never entered his mind. "This opportunity was something I never would've thought of passing up," adding "it's built to be sustainable to be able to win at a high-level if you could do it the right way."
South Dakota starting center Cameron Fens is fully healthy, per coach Eric Peterson. He averaged 8.6 ppg and 5.0 rpg last season, but played only 19 games.
Omaha coach Chris Crutchfield says it’s all about who you can keep around. The Mavs had six players transfer out after their 22-13 season, but plenty still stuck around. “We got nine guys that was part of last years team that understands our culture and what we built and that makes us even stronger and more connected heading into this season,” he said. "I think it (retention) is huge at this level. At the mid-major level, you have to be able to retain guys and continue the culture you're trying to build."
2. No surprises on Big Ten’s preseason awards
The Big Ten’s preseason All-Conference team is pretty good. In fact, I only have a couple minor points to make.
