1. Michigan State puts out spark in College Park

No. 16 Maryland battled No. 8 Michigan State all Wednesday night, and seemed to have a late edge. But then Michigan State junior guard Tre Holloman silenced College Park.

The halfcourt heave probably shouldn’t have even happened.

Maryland junior guard Ja'Kobi Gillespie gifted the Spartans a final shot, as he attempted a 3-pointer with over four seconds left. With a little less time on the clock, Holloman can’t get his shot off.

The Terps will be thinking about this 58-55 loss for a while. They were down nine points with 5:24 left and battled back to make it a game without even sinking a field goal over the last five minutes.

All in all, this was a classic Big Ten battle. Both teams were held under 0.9 points per possession and nobody seemed to be able to score. Well, except MSU freshman guard Jase Richardson (15 points, 6-of-14 FG) and Terps sophomore guard Rodney Rice (20 points, 6-of-12 FG). Nobody else for Michigan State reached double figures, but all 10 players who saw the court scored.

The Spartans’ depth came through, and they were able to limit Maryland big men Derik Queen and Julian Reese to just 14 points and 17 rebounds. In the previous five games, that duo was averaging a combined 34.6 points and 22.6 rebounds.

"They are homegrown man," Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said. "They play for the guys before them. They care about Michigan State. I can't tell you how proud I am of my team and those guys."

Michigan State (23-5, 14-3) is now creeping closer to a Big Ten regular season title. It’ll control its own destiny with upcoming games against Wisconsin, Iowa and Michigan. Up next for Maryland (21-7, 11-6) is a trip to Penn State on Saturday.
