1. Houston stays on brand in win over Kansas

Houston’s done three things under Kelvin Sampson: Rebound, defend like mad, and win games. It certainly did all three during Monday’s 65-59 win vs. Kansas.

The No. 3 Cougars had their worst shooting performance of the season, hitting just 35.3% of their field goals, but it didn’t matter because it stayed on brand everywhere else. It grabbed 17 offensive rebounds, and forced 20 Kansas turnovers — resulting in a whipping 26 more shot attempts than KU. That’s a familiar sight to anyone who’s watched Sampson’s team the last few years.

“I’ve told our kids many times, we don’t have to make shots to win,” he said afterward, via the Houston Chronicle. “We’ve got zero interest in trying to impress somebody on how good we look. At the end of the day, the game is all about winning, not impressing somebody.”

What’s impressive is the winning. Houston (26-4, 18-1 in Big 12) bolstered its case for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament with its 8th Quad 1 win — and record-tying 18th Big 12 win. A win over Baylor would be the most by any major conference team (a result of going to 20 league games), and could end up with a massive gap between it and second place. It’s five games ahead of Texas Tech and Baylor.

“They’ve made it look really easy,” Kansas coach Bill Self said.

Nothing came easy for Kansas (19-11, 10-9), which played well at times. It led late in the first half, and again in the second half. Houston never led by more than seven, but turnovers and that defensive rebounding foiled any chance of an upset. The Jayhawks are 1-8 vs. teams in KenPom’s top 49 since Nov. 26.

They’ll close the regular-season on Saturday against Arizona. It hasn’t lost on Senior Night since 1983. But during a season where it hasn’t met expectations since November, will that be the latest KU streak to end?

2. Duke nears historic ACC campaign + more results

Houston wasn’t the only team that delivered an on-brand performance on Monday night. No. 2 Duke did what it’s done throughout ACC play — crush its opponent with a 93-60 home win over Wake Forest.
